Materials and Finishes

MFC (Melamine Faced Chipboard)

Chipboard is a wood derivative consisting of a mixture of adhesive and wood particles compressed at high temperature. This provides a rigid, stable and consistent surface. The chipboard is then faced with a decorative melamine, which is beautiful, colourful and hard wearing.

Upkeep: Clean with a non-abrasive detergent in water, or dust with a dry cloth. Avoid abrasive products and solvents.

Wood Veneer

As an alternative to melamine some products have a wood veneer finish. This is a thin sheet of real wood to give the furniture a look of solid timber. Wood veneer is a natural product and the grain while being very beautiful may give the furniture a different appearance of colour when viewed from different angles and in different lights. Veneers also alter their appearance over time with lighter veneers generally going deeper, and darker furniture going lighter. Matching veneers can be very difficult particularly if the furniture is bought at different times.

Upkeep: Always dust in the direction of the grain. Do not use furniture polish. Marks can be cleaned off with a soft cloth and warm water with a drop of washing up liquid.

MDF (Medium density Fibreboard)

MDF is used in the same way chipboard but is often used for shaped tops where the edge cannot be covered by solid wood lipping or an MFC edging.

Metals and Plastics

All metals and plastics are of high quality and are fit for purpose. Painted surfaces use low solvent or water based paints.

Environmental

All suppliers have a stated environmental policy, which generally meet the aims of BS EN ISO 14000s Environmental Management Systems. Wood products come from well managed, sustainable sources. Chipboard has low formaldehyde content. Solvent use is kept to an absolute minimum and has been eliminated from many processes sued in the production of furniture. Environment pollution from waste is minimised and where waste is produced it is generally reused or recycled.
